About me

When I moved to Lana'i in 2001 to teach, I gave up my TV, got off the couch, walked all over the island, created 'ohana and found I felt more alive than ever. Things didn't work out with the state DOE and I returned to Nebraska.

Inside of five years, I returned to journalism, racking up more than 65 state & national awards. As editor of a newspaper in a very diverse community of immigrants, I committed to bring change and acceptance to the town. In doing so, my efforts allowed my newspaper to become the most profitable in the Omaha World-Herald chain in 2005. The town and county rallied, but I found myself dying on my couch.

It took me until 2007 to get off my 'okole and move back to Hawai'i, where I have spent the past two years constantly working on ways to be alive. There's no TV in my house. I take the bus/walk most everywhere. I'm returning to creative writing, comedy, art, acting & singing. Most important, I'm learning to do more with less and am still building communities.

Why I love Hawaii

I love the diverse blend of cultures found here. I love that people of all sizes are valued and respected. I love learning more about Hawaiian history and the ideal of sharing stories to hand down values to the next generation. I also greatly value the incredible beauty and sights only found here.

My interests

Writing, editing, documentaries, politics, photography, arts and humanities, singing, speech/forensics, humane education, architecture and interior design.

My Journey to Connectedness started with a special mentor/friend who suggested I become aware of things I watch in the media. In the beginning, it was tough as I could watch 500 channels and lament nothing being on. With my mentor's guidance, I stopped watching horror movies and scary TV shows,...
