About me

I'm a graduate student at UH, finishing up my thesis project (a collection of poetry) for an MA in English. I'm from Mililani, but I currently live in Makiki with my best friend Natalie.

Why I love Hawaii

"Perhaps I could make a living here merchandising my inchoate perceptions of the city fabricated in the smithy of a gigantic unfamiliarity. But could I see myself taking that as my life's work? I would rather be where I could see my work cut out for me, where I could tell what I was looking at. In other words my hometown." - Chinua Achebe

[what this means: I didn't always love Hawai'i, but after being away for college I realized that honoring the fact that I'm from a certain place, and thus have a responsibility to that place, adds a lot of meaning to what would otherwise be a floating, exciting, but rootless life. Now after living here for the last two years, I'm starting to see what there is to love.]

My interests

poetry, settler colonialism in Hawai‘i, postcolonial literature, representation, globalization, cultural studies, Hawaiian language, French, masculinity, gardens, hiking, science fiction, buddhism, food

Successes since my last post: 1. the jalapeno seed sprouted! that made me very happy. I planted two more and am patiently waiting for them to emerge. 2. I put together the toilet paper tube seed starters. I'm still waiting for the tomato seeds I planted in them to sprout. 3. I started the potato...

I'm not sure when I decided I wanted to start gardening, but I do know that for the last year or so I've been putting it off. I'd been attending grad classes, working as a UH writing mentor, being the News Editor of Ka Leo, and holding down a part-time cashiering job, which left me little time to...
