The Responsibility to Learn and to Travel

Mar 23, 2009

Travelling and seeing the world through another culture's perspective is something that every young person with the drive and the resources to do so should prioritize. Our state can only go so far when we benchmark off of each other... we need to look beyond our magazines, blogs and own limited examples domestically, and have a responsibility to look outwardly. We need to think critically, and ask questions, like:

- Why is Beijing's CBD district under 50% occupancy?
- What factors led to the near-bankruptcy of Miami's billionaire-developer Jorge Perez?
- What can Kahuku learn from new cutting-edge Thai shrimp farmers, and vice-versa?
- What cultural elements can Hawaii architects and urban planners learn from Hong Kong's feng shui developments?
- How can wind farms off the coast of Spain be ecologically and aesthetically implemented in a sustainable way in Molokai?

If you are passionate about Hawaii, leave Hawaii. But make sure that when you leave, you come back... that's what this place needs. Think globally, act locally.
