No Ka 'Uala
Aug 11, 2009
Most people know the importance of kalo in the Hawaiian diet, but somehow in between we forgot about another key player, uala. Produce shelves in grocery stores are stocked with Irish potatoes, a variety of yams, and Okinawan sweet potatoes but what about our own local varieties? How can simply push aside a crop that fed the multitudes? At my house, cuttings of several varieties of uala have grown roots and are begging to be planted. My dad is against it, simply because of the vine growth and constant trimming an uala patch would require in our skimpy, this-is-what-your-money-gets-in-Honolulu, yard. My answer to him, Dad, its sustenance! How is your torch ginger going to feed the world? I know, its not! So I say, plant that uala, Hawaii. Its a local crop that requires minimal effort and has low (if any) environmental impacts. Its also been feeding our kupuna for generations, so why should we stop now?

Great points Pua'ala. I admit I have planted torch ginger. Lately though I have committed to only kanu plants we can eat. I didn't think about uala but now I'm going to look into growing some.
