The Conversion of a Portion of the Hawaii Pacific University - Hawaii Loa Campus Sewage Treatment Plant (and adjacent area) into a Sustainable Agriculture Aquaponics Farm.
Oct 24, 2009
- Tilapia fish will be cultivated and their waste products (along with the fish green water) will be used to grow plants, herbs, and vegetables.
- These plants (and associated gravel substrate and bacteria) will clean and condition the fish green water which will be transported back to the fish tank.
- It is important to understand that this is a recycling system where absolutely no waste water is released into our precious environment.
- This aquaponics farm will allow Hawaii Pacific University the distinction of being a national leader in the movement of “green” university campuses across the United States of America as well as becoming a resident expert in sustainable agriculture on the island of Oahu.
- This aquaponics project will allow the participation of numerous student researchers who will obtain needed research experiences that will bolster their chances of matriculating to graduate schools of health-care and/or the sciences.
- This aquaponics project will get students involved in a cause that they fully believe in.
