Last Friday, "Black Friday", I joined the Kokua Hawaii Foundation and Kanu Hawaii Simplify the Holidays crew at Ala Moana Shopping Center. I never thought I'd ever go to a mall on Black Friday, but this was the best reason I have ever heard to go to a crazy busy mall. Before the event, a few dozen volunteers collected paper, cloth, and other materials. Some of the paper was plain and so they stamped it with festive patterns and colors. My favorite wrapping items were the old calendars with Japanese prints and the bits of fabric donated by Sig Zane Designs. They made incredibly beautiful wrapping materials! Since my wrapping skills were pretty low, I helped by inviting shoppers with bags to the wrapping/card making tables and shot some pictures from my cell phone and camera. I pieced together most of these pics into the video above to give you a two minute overview of the two and a half hour wrapping session.

Often, I encourage friends and family to use existing materials as wrapping paper. This was a great opportunity for me to go beyond sharing with words and into sharing with actions. Mahalo to the volunteers who put this together!
