Video of Social Media Session from HCF Board Leadership Conference

Feb 17, 2010

Yesterday, I participated on a panel to introduce the topic of Social Media to participants of Hawaii Community Foundation’s Board Leadership conference. Joining me on the panel was Roxanne Darling, Chris Noble and Christine Lu. Based on this presentation, I think there is a real need for a very basic workshop to answer what exactly is social media, should my organization participate, in what ways can it help to meet mission, and how exactly do I go about getting started? Roxanne runs the Social Media Club of Hawaii (http://smchawaii.org/) which offers answers to questions like these.

A few minutes before we got started, Roxanne decided to live stream the event. Just by sending out a couple of tweets over Twitter, a few folks jumped on and watched the panel live. We didn’t expect that the online crew would in some way interact with the folks at the conference but in one small way they did. During the Q&A portion of the presentation, a woman at the conference shared her appreciation for the beach clean up on Oahu’s west side this past weekend (event was organized Kokua Hawaii Foundation, Star 101.9 and Kanu). She talked about how impressed she was of the effort…the couple of hundred folks, the respect they had, and the amount of area they cleaned up. From the presenter’s table, we were watching a live Twitter stream so as she talked about that event we saw a tweet from @MrEricPiRaTe (http://www.twitter.com/MrEricPiRaTe) who was watching live. He had tweeted a link to a picture from that very clean up (posted above). We were then able to load it up to the screen at the end of the presentation!

Social media has been an incredible way for us to share our story through blogs, journals, videos on youtube, pictures on flickr, notes on Facebook, and tweets on Twitter. But mostly, we have been humbled at how open you the membership have been in sharing your stories. About 50,000 commitments have been pledged. In many ways, a commitment is a very personal story about you. In addition to commitments, thousands have uploaded pictures, linked to videos, shared a bit about themselves, and written journals.

Am feeling very humbled by the sharing of these stories. And social media really helps to capture them.
