Home Energy Assessment

Jul 11, 2011 by Vance Arakaki | Story Popularity: 9

Just completed an energy assessment for a home I rent Mānoa Valley!

I was joined by Kanu Hawaii Volunteers Kasha Ho, Brandon Hayasahi, Karen Shishido, and Wayde Toyama.  From the Rewarding Internships for Sustainable Employment (RISE) Program, interns Mondy Jamshidi, Melvin Quemado, and McClyde Gaborno.

Mondy and her crew took me through HECO's "Power To Save: An Energy Conservation Guide for Your Home" to assess my home's energy use.  The goal from this was to take a look at my overall energy usage and behavior.  Throughout the assessment they focused on different areas of energy consumption: lighting, water heating, cooling, electronics, clothes washer & dryer, refrigerator & freezer, and kitchen appliances such as microwave ovens and toasters.

  1. Vance, hope your housemates found the assessment to helpful as well! Thanks for allowing Kanu and RISE to use your house!

    Mahalo!

This is a great video! Mahalo Vance for hosting.

Thanks for doing this. I thought it was helpful to acknowledge the limitations of conserving when someone is a renter. That is a tough nut to crack.

Can I suggest some ways to improve upon an already good video?

Find a house with a more typical energy consumption pattern. It looks like Vance is already pretty energy frugal. Provide an onscreen chart of the home's current energy consumption and the projected savings for each recommended change. I doubt Vance was able to hit the 25% reduction KANU is recommending for us. I suspect he would save more like 5% from the changes proposed, if that.

I think KANU is doing wonderful work in showing us specific, tangible steps for improving our lives and reducing our impact on the environment and remain impressed with your drive.

    Mahalo.

Thanks Vance for hosting this and Brandon et al in doing this video. It's great and I wish we could expand this program to other islands.

Would you kokua and log in? All features are turned on when logged in. Mahalo!
