Kanu Hawaii May 2013 report to members.
We live in a small apartment complex where there is some green space, but most of it is in the shade. Fed up with only being able to keep herbs alive, my husband constructed this little gem of a garden outside of our parking spot where it can get full afternoon sun. He first asked the neighbors if they would mind. To our surprise, everyone loved the idea and wanted their own garden box too! He used untreated cedar planks as a frame and filled it with a truck load of cheap but organic (and magic) soil from the compost center on Kapaa Quarry Road.
Now less than a month after planting we have budding Manoa lettuce, chard, cucumbers, eggplants, and green and hot peppers on the way. I have to give all the credit to my husband as I have a pretty black thumb and because I was a little dubious of the plan. But we had our first delicious parking lot grown salad this week!
