Beyond being a source of luscious lavender, lehua, macadamia, Manoa wildflower and other local honeys, I've only recently begun to consider how important bees are to maintaining a healthy local food system.

There are three events this week sponsored at Punahou School on bees and beekeeping: a showing of the movie Queen of the Sun this Thursday followed by a forum on bees and beekeeping, an educators' lecture on bees in the curriculum with Big Island bee educator Jenny Bach on Friday, and family pollinator garden/home beekeeping workshops with Jenny on Saturday!

Have a look at http://www.queenofthesun.com/ for info. on the movie, and go to http://www.punahou.edu/foodforthought for more information on this week's Honeybees in Our Islands events!
