Community Organizer

Kanu Hawai‘i is working to build a social movement for a more environmentally sustainable, compassionate, and economically resilient Hawai‘i through personal commitments to change and group demonstrations of kuleana. We reach out to individuals online and offline, asking them to make personal commitments that move Hawai‘i toward this preferred future. During the course of the next year, we will be focusing on group action campaigns aimed at tackling changes in government and industry.

Kanu Hawaiʻi is seeking applicants for a Community Organizer position. One primary responsibility of the Community Organizer will be to organize Kanu Hawaii members, volunteers, and others for group actions designed to influence government and industry decision-making. The Community Organizer will also play an active role in grassroots education and outreach to engage new people in the work of building more sustainable communities across Hawaii.  The Community Organizer will engage people around issues of energy security, climate change, local food security, waste reduction and other topics related to building a more sustainable Hawaii. The Community Organizer reports to the Executive Director.

Areas of Responsibility

  • Consumer Action Campaigns: Plan and organize consumer actions that encourage local businesses and institutions to shift into more sustainable practices; manage teams of volunteers to execute.
  • Citizen Action Campaigns: Engage local government to be more transparent and responsive to citizen input; Mobilize citizen power to make policy changes that move Hawai’i toward sustainable systems.
  • Energy Action Campaigns: Part of this position will focus on organizing action campaigns relating to energy issues on Oʻahu.
  • Member Engagement & Communications: Develop communications (written, video, images, social media messaging) that engage membership and inspire action.
  • Event Planning & Execution: Plan events that build and maintain community among Kanu members.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience managing grassroots political or advocacy campaigns preferred
  • Effective at managing volunteers in a campaign atmosphere
  • Adept at defining goals and roles, skillful delegation, and holding teams and individuals accountable for results
  • Ability to work with culturally, ethnically, and economically diverse communities
  • Ability to recruit new volunteers
  • Available for evening and weekend events
  • Ability to thrive in small, virtual teams that adjust rapidly to meet the needs of constituents
  • Able to or willing to learn to use electronic, video, and social media tools including HTML
  • Humble, flexible and positive attitude; belief in sustainable, compassionate, and resilient local communities.

This position is based on Oʻahu. Annual salary is budgeted between $50,000 and $55,000 which includes 100% of individual medical insurance, a personal professional development fund, and a small discretionary spending fund. This position is currently funded from January 2012 through January 2013. As with all positions at Kanu Hawaiʻi, responsibilities and tenure may change depending upon future funding.
