Got Aloha for a Teacher?
I've been a Study Abroad Advisor committed to promoting a deeper understanding and appreciation for cultural diversity. I hope to dedicate my life's work to advising and preparing students to study abroad in less traditional and more underdeveloped regions of
the world because in my own experience I've found it to be one of the
most effective means of instilling an ingrained sense of cultural
competence and social consciousness. Many of the students I've been
fortunate enough to advise, return from their semester or year in
Uganda or Bolivia not only learning a new language or appreciating the culinary art of Matoke and Salteas but also a self realization of the wealth, privilege and often wastefulness of the US. After watching
their host mother spend an entire day's work fetching water, they
think twice about leaving the faucet running as they brush their
teeth. Once they've seen the 101 ways an empty soda can has been
reused, they think twice about the American tradition of buying and
throwing away, buying and throwing away, buying and throwing away.
You get the picture;)
