Museum Education Tour Guide


Alexander and Baldwin Sugar Museum

Do you like working with elementary school children? Do you like telling stories? The Sugar Museum is seeking Education Program Docents who are trained volunteers that provide educational services for elementary school visitors. They provide a welcoming environment, and guide students through the museum.

The Sugar Museum’s Education Program teaches students about the sugar industry and plantation life on Maui, and fulfills social studies benchmarks for State of Hawaii Department of Education for second grade. We also offer programs for preschool, middle, high school, private and homeschooled students, and many more. You will join a pool of other docents who are called upon monthly, depending on school reservation bookings, to guide tours. Weekdays, 9:00 – 11:30 a.m., September through May, while school is in session. The Program is not active during school holidays, breaks, or intercessions.

Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Greet and welcome visitors
  • Conduct three 20-minute tours in tandem with another docent, for groups of second grade students who are accompanied by a teacher or chaperone
  • Represent the Sugar Museum in a professional and courteous manner to members of the visiting public
  • Interact with students, teachers and chaperones in a positive and engaging manner
  • Ensure tours and programs are delivered in a timely manner

Qualifications:

  • Interest in working with young children
  • Patience with groups of young children in a field trip setting
  • Comfortable speaking in front of groups
  • Desire to learn about Maui’s sugar history and plantation life, and share your knowledge
  • Reliable and punctual
  • Flexibility, enthusiasm, and an attitude of respect for working with diverse young people
  • Physically able to stand for 20 minutes or more
  • Interest in learning and teaching. Experience in education or teaching may be helpful, but not required
  • An attitude of tolerance and respect

Training & Commitments:

  • Follow at least two different docents inside the museum
  • Observe at least two different school visits
  • Receive a script for guidance, and access to other learning materials
