Volunteer Onboard for Whale and Dolphin Research, Naturalist

Wild Side Specialty Tours

Join our wildlife boat tours and collect photo ID’s and data on Hawaiʻi’s marine wildlife. Our boat-based volunteer opportunities are open to a wide variety of participants who feel conservation and environmental protection of dolphins, whales, turtles, coral reefs and ocean habitats may be part of their life mission.

Comfortable on boats, good in water skill’s and used to DSLR cameras and GoPro’s.

There is neither compensation nor a charge for the program, but we emphasize that accepted applicants must treat the position with the same dedication they would a paid job, and be available for at least 1 day a week for a minimum of 8 weeks.

Wild Side Specialty Tours

About the organizer

We are a female owned and led marine wildlife tour operator, taking up to 6 passengers on a 3-6 hour tour along the west Oahu coastline. We might see different species of whales and dolphins, reef fish, Hawaiian green sea turtles, whale sharks, the Hawaiian monk seal, pelagic birds etc.. We do not seek volume on our tours; we aim only to provide a quality, thought-provoking and potentially life-changing experience. In a global climate of “loving nature to death” Wild Side educates guests about the plight of our local marine life, promoting sustainable tourism and stewardship to people from around the world, leaving them with compassion for wildlife and tools to conserve them. Every member of our team makes sure our guests are safe, have lasting memories, and leave with a better understanding of our host culture and precious resources – with a smile on their faces and a sharing of why we love what we do. Citizen science gained through our  tours help us to protect, preserve and create sustainable practices. Data obtained alongside our biologist/naturalist crew is presented to and helps to influence scientists and local communities. “He aliʻi ka ʻāina, he kauwā ke kanaka”: “The land is a chief, and man is its servant.” In our worldview, there is no separation between nature and people; just as the land takes care of us, we need to take care of the land.
