Hawaiʻi Nature Center

What We Do

By connecting children and families to nature, Hawaiʻi Nature Center creates community, meaningful change and a sustainable future.  We provide environmental education with an interactive and immersive approach.  Students become stronger critical thinkers and develop life building skills of confidence, autonomy, and leadership.  They experience civic engagement, positive environmental behaviors and improved academic performance.

Who We Are

This noble work stared in a tropical rainforest in 1972 with the Outdoor Circle proposed an education center in O‘ahu’s Makiki Valley.  By 1981, the Makiki Environmental Education Center opened and five years later, it grew into an independent 501(c)3 non-profit called the Hawai‘i Nature Center.  We offer hands-on, science-based school field trips for elementary students; environmental day camps during school breaks; weekly homeschool programs; weekend family programs and birthday parties for HNC members, and various volunteer service projects.
