The Daughters of Hawai‘i are seeking dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers to join our programs at Hānaiakamalama, Queen Emma Summer Palace. As a volunteer, you will play a meaningful role in preserving and sharing the history and legacy of Hawai‘i’s aliʻi while contributing to the care of this treasured historic site.
We offer a variety of volunteer opportunities to match different interests and skill sets:
Welina (Hospitality & Guest Experience)
Serve as the welcoming presence of the Palace by greeting visitors and providing a warm, inviting introduction to the site. Volunteers in this role help orient guests, answer general questions, and create a positive first impression as visitors step into a former home of Hawai‘i’s royal family. This is perfect for individuals who enjoy engaging with people and sharing aloha.
Mālama (Care & Stewardship)
Take part in the preservation and care of the Palace and its grounds through hands-on projects. Activities may include light cleaning, assisting with the care of collections, gardening, and helping maintain the integrity of both indoor and outdoor spaces. This role supports the ongoing stewardship of this historic site and is great for those who enjoy working with their hands and giving back to the ʻāina.
Docent (Education & Interpretation)
Help bring history to life by guiding visitors through the Palace and sharing the stories of Hawai‘i’s royal family. Docents are trained to provide engaging, accurate, and meaningful interpretations of the site, its furnishings, and its historical significance. This role is ideal for those passionate about Hawaiian history, storytelling, and education.
Administrative Support
Assist behind the scenes with essential clerical tasks that help our organization run smoothly. Responsibilities may include data entry, organizing records, assisting with correspondence, supporting membership programs, and helping coordinate internal communications. This role is ideal for those who enjoy organization, detail-oriented work, and contributing to the foundation of daily operations.
Special Events Support
Be part of the vibrant community events hosted at the Palace. Volunteers assist with event setup and breakdown, guest check-in, activity support, and ensuring events run smoothly. Opportunities may include cultural programs, classes, and evening gatherings. This role is well-suited for those who enjoy dynamic environments and teamwork.

About the organizer
Since the early 1900s, the Daughters of Hawai‘i have been dedicated to preserving and perpetuating the rich cultural legacy of Hawai‘i’s aliʻi. Through careful stewardship and a deep sense of kuleana, the organization protects some of the most significant historic sites connected to the Hawaiian Kingdom.
The Daughters are entrusted with the care of Hānaiakamalama (Queen Emma Summer Palace) and Huliheʻe Palace, two of the three remaining royal palaces in Hawai‘i. Both residences have been thoughtfully restored and furnished with original royal artifacts, offering visitors an authentic and intimate glimpse into the lives of Hawai‘i’s monarchs.
In addition to these palaces, the Daughters mālama the sacred birthplace of King Kamehameha III at Keauhou Bay, ensuring that this important site continues to be honored and remembered.
Beyond preservation, the Daughters of Hawai‘i bring history to life through educational programs, cultural classes, community events, and volunteer opportunities. By sharing the stories, traditions, and values of Hawai‘i’s royal past, they foster a deeper connection between the community and the islands’ heritage.
