Devil Weed Volunteer Surveys at Pūpūkea-Paumalū State Park Reserve

Oʻahu Invasive Species Committee

Join us for a guided volunteer day focused on surveying trails for Devil Weed (Chromolaena odorata), a highly invasive species. These volunteer days are led by OISC staff, ensuring you have the guidance and tools needed to help us control the spread of this harmful plant.
Each trip will include hands-on involvement in surveying and removing Devil Weed along easy-to-moderate trails. The plant is toxic to livestock, an agricultural pest, and a fire hazard. Volunteers will hand-pull plants hopefully before they mature, helping to prevent the spread of seeds by hikers and bikers.
What to Expect:
Duration: 4 to 4.5 hours of hiking
Conditions: Exposure to sun, heat, rain, mud, mosquitoes, and some steep areas of trail
Physical Requirements: Volunteers should be physically fit and able to hike at a moderate pace
Volunteers who attend this event 3 times will receive a free Devil Weed Crew t-shirt!
Requirements:
Ability to hike up to 4 miles
Bring a daypack, 2 liters of water, insect repellent, lunch, and sturdy hiking shoes
Long pants and long-sleeved shirt are recommended for protection against mosquitoes and scratches

Limited space is available. Sign ups are required at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/DWCvolunteer

Once signed up you will recieve more details including meeting location. Please reach out to oisced@hawaii.edu with any questions.
