🌿 Community Workday in Waipiʻo Valley — Nurturing ʻĀina, Reviving ʻUlu
Join Pōhāhā I Ka Lani for an open community workday in the Nāpoʻopoʻo area of Waipiʻo Valley!
Come help steward the ancient loʻi kalo (taro terraces) and prepare the land for the reestablishment of a native ʻulu (breadfruit) grove — part of the Hinaʻaiulunui Project, a community-based effort to restore food resilience and cultural heritage in this sacred valley.
📅 When: Sunday October 19, 2025. 9AM – 4PM
📍 Where: Meet at the Waipiʻo Valley Lookout for orientation before heading down together to the Nāpoʻopoʻo site.
🎟 Cost: Free for Hawaiʻi residents — all ages welcome!
🌧 Bring: Covered shoes, sun protection, water bottle, snacks/lunch, and aloha for the ʻāina.
What to Expect
Cultural Protocol & Moʻolelo: Begin the day with oli (chant), stories, and guidance from Waipiʻo’s kua ʻāina (traditional stewards).
Hands-On Stewardship: Restore ancient loʻi kalo, clear invasive plants, and assist with preparing planting zones for the ʻulu grove.
Community & Connection: Learn the history of Waipiʻo’s agricultural systems while giving back to the land that has sustained generations.
Closing Reflection: End the day with shared gratitude and reflections on mālama ʻāina (caring for the land).
Why It Matters
Your kōkua supports the revival of traditional Hawaiian agroforestry and climate-resilient food systems. Together, we honor the legacy of Hainakolo and her chiefly lineage by restoring this living landscape for future generations.
