Hawaii Island Humane Society

What We Do

Hawaii Island Humane Society is a non-profit animal welfare organization that offers lifesaving programs and community outreach services. The mission of Hawaii Island Humane Society is to prevent cruelty to animals, eliminate pet overpopulation, and enhance the bond between humans and animals. Our organization, established in 1965, serves Hawaii Island’s community with shelters in Keaau and our new Animal Community Center in Kona.

Who We Are

Mahalo for your interest in Hawaii Island Humane Society. When you join the Hawaii Island Humane Society’s ‘Ohana, you are joining a community of volunteers and staff committed to providing a progressive and fear-free approach of care and love to all our shelter guests. Volunteers are a valuable and essential asset to our organization, and to the many animals in our shelters that need loving homes. We cannot do the work we do without people like you!

We have volunteer opportunities every day of the week in flexible shifts that work with your schedule, at both shelter locations. Come join our team and help socialize cats and kittens, enrich the lives of dogs, make sure our laundry is so fresh and so clean, and more! The minimum age to volunteer is 8 years old, and children under 16 years old will need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian during their shifts.

We have several opportunities available, such as:

Cat Room Assistant
Cat Socialization
Dog Kennel Assistant
Dog Behavior and Enrichment
Laundry
Events Assistant
We also have limited opportunities for group volunteer visits. To learn more, please contact [email protected]
