Malama i na Honu

What We Do

Mālama i nā honu’s mission is to “protect Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles through education, public awareness and conservation, all in the Spirit of Aloha”. In 2007, under the authority of the Endangered Species Act, NOAA Fisheries began providing grant funds to our non-profit organization to support public outreach activities that promote respectful behavior around the Honu. Mālama i nā honu’s presence on the beach has significantly helped reduce disturbance to basking turtles. We continue to have a great relationship with NOAA and they recently posted two articles; one of them that highlights the heartbeat of our organization.

All possible volunteers must attend an orientation at Laniakea Beach to learn about our organization and see if they can commit to the 2 times a month requirement.  We ask all volunteers to do 6 hours a month of volunteer time on our beach.  They must attend an orientation and then shadow 3 times before becoming volunteers. Our purpose is to educate and do outreach, always in the Spirit of Aloha.

Next orientations are…April 15th at @ 12:30 or April 30th @ 3:00 PM.  One of those must be attended!
