ʻO Makuʻu ke Kahua

What We Do
Our mission is to promote and perpetuate Native Hawaiian values and traditions by supporting families, communities, and small businesses with educational and employment opportunities. Our organization serves and engages the community on Native Hawaiian culture, values, and traditions through our programs, market, and center, thereby continuing to be a permanent and safe foundation for fostering Native Hawaiian culture and restoring multigenerational connections to ʻāina.
Our vision is to engage and connect multi-generations to a self-sustainable lifestyle for the benefit of all of Hawaiʻi. We wish to share Native Hawaiian culture through traditional farming and agricultural practices in order to grow an educational mindset of a self-sustainable lifestyle for members of the community.
Who We Are
ʻO Makuʻu Ke Kahua (ʻOMKK) is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that was founded in 2019 by Kūpuna of the Makuʻu farmers Hawaiian Homestead Association, those who have been raised by lands and the leaders of their ahupuaʻa in Puna to promote and perpetuate Native Hawaiian values and traditions, to provide educational and employment opportunities while also developing small businesses, and to become self-sufficient in working together to create a vibrant recreational, cultural, and civic center so as to improve the quality of life and diversify the economic base of Hawaiʻi.
During our 27 consecutive years of existence here in Puna, Makuʻu Homesteads and its leaders developed a safe operating foundation that flourished with an abundance of resources—natural and cultural—-that lift up and support a community, bring balance, and ensure a hopeful future for generations to come. Our primary goal for Makuʻu is to enhance the Hawaiʻi Island community’s knowledge on Native Hawaiian culture, values and traditions through our programs, market, and community center. We are currently raising funds to build a community center for hosting culturally-centered classes and programs. In addition to our farming programs and market area, we envision the community center as a safe and secure place for the community to meet, learn, and share ideas with one another. Our goal is to serve and engage the community by supporting small, local businesses, growing food, and teaching others about Native Hawaiian culture, traditions, and values.
